Vivienne H. Tam (Smith)

I aim to bridge the scientific and medical worlds via community building, knowledge translation and educational initiatives.

About me

My academic background is a mix of chemical and materials engineering with a focus on their biomedical applications. In particular, my research explores upconversion nanoparticles as a tool for near-infrared triggered drug delivery for applications ranging from chronotherapy (giving chemotherapy at specific times in a cell cycle) for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) to improving in-vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes.

I am most interested, however, in maximizing the translational potential of biomedical discoveries via creative knowledge translation strategies, community building between scientists and clinicians, as well as novel educational initiatives.

During my PhD at McGill, I collaborated extensively with fundamental physics research labs at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), chemical synthesis and materials science labs at the Université de Montréal (Udem) and McGill, as well as biological cell culture labs at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

This allowed me to work the full span of the research pipeline, all the way from nanoparticle design and synthesis to characterization using infrared spectroscopy techniques and electron microscopy to testing in in vitro cell culture and in vivo rat models.

With my thesis now submitted, I am on the brink of discovering what’s next for me, so please reach out if you think we could work together in the future!
